A Few New Things . . .

A Faux Stained Glass Technique – Water-based paint on glass or mirror.

I become mesmerized looking at stained-glass.  While investigating stained-glass as an art practice I discovered a faux stained-glass process.  I tried it and loved it!

In my painting I utilize water-based paints on glass and a faux stained-glass technique. My subjects are often animals absurdly depicted in human situations reminiscent of The Far Side, or simply looking silly. Other pieces are relaxing and whimsical; but each work has vibrant, translucent, luminous colors. I developed a process allowing me to transfer individual paintings off the glass and onto acetate sheets. The painted subject can be removed and applied to solid surfaces like clings. Depending on where the piece is applied, it usually can be removed and applied again someplace else.

Mixed Media – A mixed bag of nuts.

When I began exploring mixed-media I gravitated to components that sparkled and had wildly bold colors. I started out combining jewelry grade glass beads with clay via jeweler’s wire into brightly colored critters. Because these animals can hang on window screening the series is called The Screen Critters.

For me, developing Mixed-Media art is like putting together a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle without a picture to follow, and uncertain if I have all the pieces. There is a moment in the process when I can see where the remaining pieces fit into the puzzle. It feels like riding a roller coaster down the first big hill. It’s just a matter of how fast my hands can put the pieces in place. The feeling of accomplishment is so gratifying!

Currently I’m developing a series of hanging pieces for meditation and quieting practices, as well as naturalizing a space. More to come . . .
